In 1993–1994, the University of Iringa was founded as Iringa Lutheran College, which offered studies leading to a theology diploma. The first undergraduate students were enrolled in a course that led to the Bachelor of Business Administration degree in 1995–96. They received their degrees in 1998, the year that Iringa University College (IUCO), Tanzania’s first officially recognized private university, joined Tumaini University. 2010 saw the rebranding of Tumaini University as Tumaini University Makumira, with Iringa University College serving as one of its member colleges. The Tumaini University Makumira Iringa University College changed its name to the University of Iringa (UoI) in 2013, becoming a fully recognized university.
