The University of California San Francisco (UCSF) is engaged in a four-year Cooperative Agreement with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention-Tanzania (CDC-Tanzania), funded through the United States’ President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). Through this agreement, UCSF provides strategic information technical assistance, focusing on surveillance, improving data quality, and enhancing health information systems (HIS), to the Ministry of Health (MoH) and PEPFAR implementing partners (IPs).

UCSF plans to conduct two assessments:

  1. Assessment of Enhanced Adherence Counseling Services and Utility of Urine Tenofovir Test for Monitoring Antiretroviral Adherence in People Living with HIV in Tanzania:
    This study will identify challenges within the EAC cascade and explore data-driven opportunities to improve EAC implementation. It will be conducted in Dar es Salaam, Mbeya, and Morogoro regions.
  2. ACCESS: Assessing Community-Centered Strategies for Effective HIV Service Solutions for Mobile Populations in Tanzania’s Lake Zone, 2025:
    This study will assess the availability, utilization, and barriers to HIV prevention, care, and treatment services for fishing and mining communities in Kagera and Geita regions.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Under the guidance of Regional Assessment Coordinators, successful candidates will support data collection, including data abstraction from paper and electronic tools, obtaining informed consent, and conducting interviews.

Key responsibilities:

  • Attend assessment training.
  • Understand the assessment protocol and operations manual thoroughly.
  • Engage potential participants following standard operating procedures.
  • Document assessment activities, challenges, and report issues to the coordinator.
  • Obtain informed consent from participants.
  • Conduct qualitative and quantitative interviews.
  • Collect data using tablets and Excel templates, ensuring secure storage and upload.
  • Maintain privacy and confidentiality regarding assessment-related information.
  • Gather feedback or suggestions from participants, as needed.
  • Perform other duties assigned by the assessment coordinator.

Experience, Skills, and Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Minimum age of 25 years.
  • Bachelor’s degree in social sciences, health-related subjects, or equivalent.

  • Proficiency in computer use, including Microsoft Office and Excel.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Experience working with stigmatized populations and discussing sensitive issues such as sexuality and HIV/AIDS is advantageous.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Fluency in English and Swahili.
  • Availability to work in Dar es Salaam, Mbeya, Morogoro, Kagera, and/or Geita from March to May 2025.
