Summary of the Role
The Teacher Intern Program offers young Tanzanian adults the opportunity to gain skills and experience in education. Interns will observe and assist in Mathematics and Individual & Societies classrooms, gaining exposure to an international school environment. They will receive training and mentorship while working with students under the guidance of lead teachers.
During the internship, interns may also be required to serve as substitute/cover teachers. Upon completing the one-year program, interns may apply for a competitive traineeship that allows them to continue at IST while pursuing internationally recognized teaching qualifications.
General Responsibilities
- Assist in creating a learning environment that fosters student growth.
- Support students individually or in small groups.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding student and school information.
- Ensure classroom discipline that fosters a safe, positive learning environment.
- Supervise students to ensure their health, welfare, and safety.
- Protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Assist with the preparation and organization of teaching materials.
- Supervise students in both classroom and extracurricular activities.
- Collaborate with colleagues and maintain positive relationships with students and parents.
- Participate in curriculum and staff development activities.
- Maintain professional competence through continuous education.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal.
Education & Qualifications
- A University degree in Education with a specialization in Mathematics and Individual & Societies.
Skills, Competencies, and Experience
- Tanzanian Citizen, aged 23-28.
- No criminal record.
- Patience and empathy in working with students.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills.
- Willingness to learn and adopt modern teaching approaches.
- Ability to supervise students outside the classroom.
- Experience with Google Workspace and online communication tools.
- Proficiency in English and Kiswahili (additional languages are an advantage).
- Interest in other cultures and diversity appreciation.
Remuneration
- Interns will receive a monthly honorarium/stipend and health insurance.
