Founded in 2001, the Zanzibar Muslim Women Aids Support Organization (ZAMWASO) is a non-governmental, non-profit organization. Through enhanced community health and education, the organization is committed to promoting the well-being of youth and orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) in communities with a high HIV load. In Mjini District, Unguja, ZAMWASO will carry out the four-year USAID Kizazi Hodari (Brave Generation) Southern Zone Project from 2023 to 2027 with direct assistance from Deloitte Consulting.

Improving the health, protection, and well-being of OVC and kids ages 0–17 in high-HIV load areas is the project’s overarching objective. In order to provide comprehensive services that aim to maintain the health, safety, education, and stability of all OVC subpopulations, the project will be carried out in cooperation with government social welfare and health systems and structures, clinical and community implementing partners (IP), and other stakeholders.

Location: Unguja, Zanzibar.
Contract Duration: 12 months (Renewable)

Position Summary:

In order to carry out the USAID Kizazi Hodari (brave generation) Southern Zone project, a project accountant plays a crucial role. Their main responsibility is to provide financial support and guidance while working under the general supervision of the project manager, closely monitored by the ZAMWASO Executive Director, and in coordination with project technical staff.

In addition to facilitating the maintenance of accurate, current financial and accounting records for the efficient and seamless operation of all USAID Kizazi Hodari (Brave Generation) Southern Zone Project implementation and decision-making, the project accountant is in charge of planning, designing, and coordinating the implementation of sound accounting, financial management, control systems, and procedures for all operational areas.

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Help the project manager oversee and manage all financial aspects of the company’s initiatives and activities. All program financial and accounting reports and documents, such as cash books, payment vouchers, bank reconciliation statements, budget compliance reports, and any other financial reports that donors may request, must be prepared and submitted on time. These reports must also be submitted in accordance with the donor project’s reporting requirements.
  • Verify the correctness of the necessary supporting documentation for each payment voucher and make sure all expenses fall within the allocated project budget.
  • Get bank transfers, payments, and transactions ready.
  • In compliance with current donor and/or ZAMWASO policies, create regular financial reports and other financial papers for the administration of the ZAMWASO programs.

Minimum required Qualifications, Experience, and Skills Education:

Education:

  • A bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or a similar discipline.
  • An additional benefit will be having a master’s degree in one of the aforementioned professions.

Skills:

  • Outstanding communication skills in Swahili and English, both in writing and speaking.
  • The capacity and desire to work a variety of hours as needed without frequent or strict supervision.
  • Skills in negotiating that show the capacity to work together and coordinate with a variety of parties and intricate priorities.
  • Outstanding expertise and familiarity with QuickBook.
  • Strong financial analysis skills and practical understanding of tax laws
  • Excellent stress and organizing skills
  • The capacity to manage a large amount of work.

Experience:

  • At least two (2) years of experience working in finance or accounting for a public health or OVC programs agency.
